Don’t Worry About Punctuation
I remember when I first started using hashtags being afraid that punctuation would mess me up.
Here’s How It Works:
- The Underscore Can Be Part Of A Hashtag
- Special Characters (&,*,!,÷,+,%, etc.) Will Mess You Up Or Be Left Out
In other words, #Example_Name1 is fine, while Example%Name2 would be broken at the % sign to just #Example.
Don’t Worry About How Long Your Hashtag Is
Just keep it under 140 characters. Here are some examples:
The above examples are fine. There are some super long hashtags out there. However, because of the fact that you are only allowed 280 chatacters, you may want to pick shorter hashtags to allow you more room. (Unless your brand name is just long.)

When you hear people making references to spammy hashtags or spamming hashtags, what they’re referring to is stacking tons of hashtags one after the other.
Here’s an example of what they mean by spammy hashtags:
In the example above, you can clearly see that there hashtag strategy is careless. It looks sloppy, and like they just threw a bunch of tags and and don’t even care what people want to read.
When you hashtag your links like this, there’s a couple of disadvantages.
1. People will unfollow you because they feel like it’s disrespectful.
2. It looks to people and Twitter like you are not paying attention to what you’re doing. This would cause you to have the wrong hashtags for your topic, and that’s intruding on people that are posting on other topics.
This type of hashtagging strategy is more harmful than effective, and it should be avoided.
